A couple of hours ago I talked with the Mayor to pass on concerns I was hearing from residents. It sounds like the city fireworks show will be canceled. But what about consumer fireworks?
Most everyone knows that I am a self proclaimed fireworks geek. I have sold consumer fireworks, worked on display fireworks shows, and put on some of the best backyard fireworks shows that my budget would allow.
There are 3 major opinions I am hearing from residents and business owners.
- Protect our freedom to celebrate with fireworks.
- It is too hot/dry, cancel all discharge and sales of fireworks.
- Cancel all discharge of consumer fireworks.
This year is exceptional, and I for one believe that it is important to protect our rights as exceptional times too often result in permanent changes. We should not make decisions out of fear.
I urged the Mayor to allow fireworks retailers to open and sell fireworks. Fireworks can also be used at New Years, which has a greatly reduced risk of fire. The Mayor will be calling for an emergency meeting of the Deer Park City Council sometime next week to make a decision about consumer fireworks.
This year I would ask that everyone keeps their Independence Day celebrations modest and consider saving the big fireworks for New Years.
